The Matrix - Blue Pill or Red Pill

Neo has spent his life feeling like something is fundamentally wrong with the world. He finally meets Morpheus, a mysterious figure who confirms his suspicions.

Morpheus explains that the reality Neo knows is actually a simulation designed to hide a dark truth.

He presents Neo with a life-altering choice: accept comfortable blindness or uncover an uncomfortable reality.

Morpheus: A rebel leader who believes Neo is "The One" destined to free humanity from the simulation.

Neo: A computer programmer and hacker who has always questioned the true nature of his reality.

  • Morpheus: Do you want to know what it is? The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us, even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work, when you go to church, when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

    Neo: What truth?

Morpheus: That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage. Born into a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch. A prison for your mind. Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.

Morpheus: This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Morpheus: Remember, all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more. Follow me.

Listen to the scene and fill in the missing words correctly.

Leonard: We’re watching football. There’s no flu, you know. What is this “sack” statistic they put up there? All I know about Saks is my mother there.
Sheldon: “Sacks.” It’s football for when a quarterback is tackled behind the line of scrimmage.
Leonard: Huh.
Sheldon: The line of scrimmage is the imaginary line separating the offense from the defense.
Penny: Oh, Sheldon knows football apparently. I mean, Quidditch sure, but football? Sheldon, how do you this stuff?
Sheldon: I grew up in Texas. Football is in Texas. Pro football, college football, high school football, Pee-Wee football.
  • Bondage : The state of being a slave or forced to obey someone else.

  • Simulation : A creation that mimics or looks like a real-world system or environment.

  • Blind (verb) : To prevent someone from seeing or understanding the truth.

  • Pill : A small, round piece of medicine or substance that you swallow.

  • Reality : The state of things as they actually exist, rather than as they may appear or be imagined.

Useful Phrases

Pulled over your eyes : To deceive or trick someone by hiding the truth.
Example : Don't let them pull the wool over your eyes with that cheap contract.

There is no turning back : You have reached a point where a decision cannot be changed or undone.
Example : Once you sign the lease, there is no turning back.

How deep the rabbit hole goes : How complex, strange, or deep a situation or truth really is (originally from Alice in Wonderland).
Example : The investigation started with a minor theft, but let's see how deep the rabbit hole goes.
