The Substitute Teacher

Based on a true story, Frank Abagnale Jr. is a brilliant young con artist. After moving to a new public high school following his parents' sudden separation, Frank encounters a classroom bully. Spontaneously capitalizing on a misunderstanding, he assumes the identity of a strict French substitute teacher, successfully deceiving the entire class, the real substitute, and the administration for a whole week.

Scene 1: In the Hallway
Frank Jr.: "Excuse me, do you know what room 17 French is?"
「すみません、フランス語の17号室がどこか分かりますか？」 Student: "Yeah, you freaking killed him! You still owe me encyclopedias!"

Frank Jr.: "Quiet down, people. My name is Mr. Abagnale. That’s Abagnale, not Abignalee, not Abagnahlee, but Abagnale. Now, somebody please tell me where you left off in your textbooks."
「静かにしなさい、皆さん。私の名前はアバグネイルです。アビナリーでもアバナリーでもなく、アバグネイル。さて、誰か教科書のどこまで進んだ（どこで終わった）か教えてください。」 (The class ignores him.)

The Real Substitute: "They sent for me. They said they needed a sub for Roberta. I came all the way from Dixon! I always sub for Roberta."
「私、呼ばれたのよ。ロベルタの代理が必要だって言われて。わざわざディクソンから来たの！ロベルタの代理はいつも私がやってるんだから。」 Frank Jr.: "Excuse me, why aren't you reading? ... Yes? I'll never come back to Benjamin Jefferson again. You tell them not to call me!"
「ちょっと、どうして読むのを止めているんだ？……（本物の代理教師に向かって）はい？『もう二度とベンジャミン・ジェフェソン高校には来ない、私を呼ばないように言ってくれ！』と？」 The Real Substitute: "What do they think, it's easy for a woman of my age and all the money that it cost to travel? I tell you, they don't give a damn."

School Official: "Mr. and Mrs. Abagnale, this is not a question of your son's attendance. I regret to inform you that for the past week, Frank has been teaching Mrs. Glasser's French class."

Your son held a teacher-parent conference yesterday and was planning a class field trip to a French bread factory in Trenton. Do you see the problem we have?"

Substitute (Sub) [サブスティテュート]: A person or thing acting or serving in place of another; a temporary teacher.
代理人、補欠。（学校の）代理教員。

Textbook [テキストブック]: A book used as a standard work for the study of a particular subject.
教科書、テキスト。

Conference [カンファレンス]: A formal meeting for discussion, consultation, or an exchange of views.
会議、面談、協議。

Confusion [コンフュージョン]: Lack of clearness or distinctness; a situation of panic or mistaken identity.
混乱、混同、手違い。

Attendance [アテンダンス]: The action or state of going regularly to or being present at a place like school or work.
出席、出席日数、参列。

Lecture [レクチャー]: An educational talk to an audience, especially to students in a university or school.
講義（をする）、授業（をする）。

Regret [リグレット]: To feel sorrow, disappointment, or distress over an unfortunate situation.

Useful Phrases

"Left off" （話や作業が）途切れる、前回終わったところ
Means where you stopped doing something or where you paused last time.
Example: Let's open our books and start exactly where we left off yesterday.

"Write up" （違反者などを）公式に報告する、罰則記録をつける
To officially report someone for misconduct or breaking rules, usually resulting in a formal punishment record.
Example: If you are caught arriving late again, the supervisor will write you up.

"Sent for me" 私を呼びにやった、私に迎え・出動を要請した
Means someone formally requested or called for a specific person to arrive or come to a location.
Example: The manager sent for me because there was an emergency with the server.

"I regret to inform you" 大変残念ながら〜をお知らせいたします（公式な通知）
A highly formal English expression used to break bad, disappointing, or unfortunate news politely.
Example: We regret to inform you that your application has been declined.
